7 Intercom alternatives for 2026 — honest AI chat comparison.

Intercom is a strong product. It's also the most expensive option in the AI chat category, especially with Fin's per-resolution billing on top of seat fees. If you're looking at an Intercom renewal and wondering what else is out there, this post is a straight comparison of the seven products that come up most often — with what each is actually good for, not just the marketing pitch.

Why teams leave Intercom

In the 40-odd migration conversations we've had with teams switching from Intercom in the last 12 months, the reasons cluster into four buckets:

  • Fin's per-resolution pricing got expensive. At 1,000 Fin resolutions a month ($0.99 each), that's ~$990 on top of seat fees. Teams doing ~5,000 resolutions a month are paying $5K+ in AI alone — more than the entire Dchat or Crisp monthly bill at the same scale.
  • Branding controls locked behind higher tiers. Removing the "Powered by Intercom" footer requires a higher plan. Same for widget color depth and launcher customization.
  • No way to bring your own AI key. Fin is managed-only. If you have an existing OpenAI or Azure OpenAI contract, you can't use it with Intercom.
  • Platform feature creep. Intercom ships tours, checklists, articles, banners, surveys — great if you use them, dead weight if you just want chat.

None of these mean Intercom is bad. They mean Intercom is optimized for companies where chat is one feature inside a larger customer platform. If chat is the main thing, there are better options.

1. Dchat — best for teams that want AI control

Best for: SaaS and ecommerce teams that want an AI chatbot with same-thread human handoff, bring-your-own-key AI, and no per-resolution fees.

What it does well: Dchat is the only mainstream AI chat product that lets you swap between a Dchat-managed OpenAI key and your own key without changing the product. 2. Crisp — best budget shared inbox

Best for: Small teams that want a solid shared inbox with basic AI at a low price.

What it does well: Crisp's Pro plan is $25/workspace (not per seat) for up to four agents — cheapest way to get a professional-feeling chat widget. MagicReply AI is decent as a drafting assistant. Inbox UX is polished and feels faster than Intercom's.

Where it falls short: MagicReply is an add-on, not the core product — the AI story is thinner than Dchat, Intercom Fin, or Tidio Lyro. No bring-your-own-key. Knowledge base ingestion is limited compared to purpose-built AI chat platforms.

3. Tidio — best for Shopify and SMB e-commerce

Best for: Small Shopify and ecommerce stores that want bot flows and a live-chat fallback.

What it does well: Tidio's Shopify integration is the strongest on this list. Lyro AI (their AI agent) handles common ecommerce queries well. Bot-flow builder is visual and approachable — non-technical store owners can build useful flows.

Where it falls short: Lyro is priced per conversation, similar to Intercom Fin — so it gets expensive at scale. No self-hosted option. Weaker for B2B and SaaS where the conversation patterns are less commerce-shaped.

4. LiveChat — best traditional live chat with AI bolted on

Best for: Teams that want a mature live chat product where AI is a helper, not the main driver.

What it does well: LiveChat has been around since 2002 and it shows. Agent UX is refined, integrations are deep, reporting is strong. If your team lives in chat all day, it's one of the most comfortable places to work.

Where it falls short: AI feels like an add-on rather than the product's center of gravity. ChatBot.com (from the same company) is the AI-first product, which means you're buying two products to cover what Dchat or Intercom give you in one.

5. Drift — best for outbound sales chat

Best for: B2B SaaS teams with an outbound motion where chat is the conversion surface on the pricing page.

What it does well: Drift's playbooks for qualifying leads and routing to reps are the best in the category. Conversational marketing is their whole identity. Salesforce integration is deep.

Where it falls short: Expensive. Support is not the primary use case — if you want AI chat for customer support rather than sales qualification, Drift is overkill. Salesloft acquired Drift in 2024 and packaging shifted toward bundled revenue tools.

6. HubSpot Chat — best if you already live in HubSpot

Best for: Teams whose CRM is HubSpot and want chat that writes directly into it.

What it does well: Free on the basic HubSpot tier. Seamless handoff of conversation data into HubSpot contacts, deals, and tickets. Chatflows (their bot builder) are solid.

Where it falls short: Only makes sense if you're already on HubSpot. AI capabilities are behind the dedicated AI chat products. Removing HubSpot branding requires a paid tier.

7. Tawk.to — best free forever (with caveats)

Best for: Early-stage teams and side projects that need chat with zero budget.

What it does well: Actually free forever, not a trial. Unlimited agents, unlimited chats. Large user base (2M+).

Where it falls short: AI is weak — Tawk.to's AI assistant is basic next to Fin, Lyro, or Dchat's OpenAI-backed replies. Tawk-branded widget unless you pay to remove. UX hasn't evolved much in recent years. Fine for a side project, not a serious support operation.

The one thing to test before you commit
